David and Janet welcome you!

We had a great time visiting the province of Nan for several days.  This is a remote mountainous region of northern Thailand on the border with Laos, just to the south and east of Chiang Rai province in which we live.  Reflecting its remoteness, Nan was a separately-ruled kingdom within Siam until as late as 1931.  The provincial capital (also called Nan) is a sleepy town that reminded David of his memories of Chiang Mai 40 years ago; except when school lets out at 3.30 and all the kids get picked up to go home, there is almost no traffic in the streets.  It was SO peaceful and quiet and pretty, very pleasant just to walk around and see the sights.

Janet took this picture as we drove along a mountain road.
This truck is a true "traveling salesman" with a loudspeaker on top announcing its wares for all to hear.
We drove on a small road to a wildlife preserve, through hundreds of teak leaves falling from the trees alongside, and were greeted by this beautiful bird.
This charming young lady works at the Nan City Tourist Information Booth; she and David traded English and Thai phrases as she advised us where to visit.
We discovered a great little restaurant owned and run by Ms. Usa, with whom we had great conversations. She moved to Nan from Bangkok 7 years ago for the quiet.
On a small road we slowed to look at these portable chicken coops. These turned out to the fighting cocks. The owner tried to sell us one, promising that we could easily recoup our investment by winning many matches! No thanks.
