Our tour to Ayuthya (see other website page) also included a stop at BangPaIn, about 20 kms away from the ancient capital. This was the summer palace of Siam's kings in the late 19th century. The 40-acre site includes a melange of buildings of varied architectural styles, mostly European as the Thai kings desired to seem more "modern" in that era by emulating European architecture. Our favorite buildings here, not surprisingly, are a classic Thai-style pavilion seated within a lake and a Chinese pavilion. Photos of both are below, along with the tall Portugese tower (David was offered the opportunity to climb to its top, but declined in recognition of the intense heat and humidity).
A lovely traditional Thai pavilion set in the water.
Janet enjoying the scenery and the warm weather.
One of the many European-style buildings, gardeners constantly at work to add to the beauty of the entire area.
Janet outside the Chinese pavilion, with a great porcelain pot.
The Portugese tower.
One more view of our favorite pavilion.
