We visited a school in the nearby town of Mae Chan that provides education for 950 students from 12 different hill tribes in our northern Thailand area, ages 7 through 17. Students live in dormitories on site, and are schooled in basics as well as in English. They have a variety of special activities including a "photo club" of which they are very proud. Many students come from broken homes in which their parents are unable to care for them (often, we were told, because of extensive use of drugs in these homes.)
We met with one of the English language teachers (Ms. Aphinya) as well as several of her top pupils, including Jeng who comes from a Hmong village in Nan province near the border with Laos. Jeng has only been at the school for 3 years, but has already learned a great deal of English. She is competing in January 2010 for a scholarship from the US Consulate in Chiang Mai to attend a school in the US. We hope to visit Jeng's village with her in the next month or two.

Another candid photo outside....
Jeng showed us many of her photos from the photo club; she especially likes artistic shots.
Seated in the library looking at Jeng's photos, including some of her home village.
Just look at the retired teacher and the top student "bonding"....
