We flew from Yangon to Nyaung Oo, the airport serving the entire Bagan area. Here we visited the impressive Shwezigon Paya ("pagoda"), with its gilded 12th century chedi and -- as always, it seems -- families enjoying the whole day there on an outing. This temple is best known for its special building holding figures of all 37 Burmese "nats." These are pre-Buddhist era spirits (some good and helpful, others evil and threatening). Most Burmese today, while Buddhists, pay special attention to their relationships with these nats.
