The Sphinx is everything one had expected in advance, and more! Fascinating, mysterious, dominant over the larger pyramids behind it....if only the horde of tourists had not been present like Biblical locusts on the march, it would have been perfection indeed. Even with the crowds, it was magical to stand in its presence. Imagine how it looked when first built, along with the largest Cheops pyramid, in 2750 BC. At that time, we were told by our guide, the Nile River came right up to the edges of its magnificent paws. Napoleon's soldiers used the Sphinx for target practice (shooting off its beard, reportedly) some 2500 years AFTER it was built here.
