Yi people live very high in the mountains, and only come down to trade in the marketplaces. We saw them on occasion, not too frequently. Their attire is absolutely fantastic...look at the hats, in particular (these are NOT worn for we tourists, but are their regular dress).
They continue to practice "slash and burn" agriculture, moving their villages every three years or so to obtain new land with greater potential. Historically, they have had a reputation as robbers and "brigands" attacking caravans of horses, mules and yaks, but this seems no longer to be the case.
