| We liked Kunming, capital of China's Yunnan province, very much...even though we were only there overnight so far. We arrived on a non-stop flight from Chiang Mai, Thailand (avoiding the Bangkok hassles) at about 5 PM, and were met at the airport by our WildChina guide, Tony Cao, who took us to the Sakura Hotel. Streets were wide, air pollution was nil, and buildings were attractive. We then went out to dinner with Tony at a restaurant located on a tiny side street in a house built in 1851. We ate in the courtyard, and had fabulous food. All dishes were great, but of special note was the sweet-and-sour Mekong River fish (see photo above). We then got up at 4.40 AM the next day to return to the airport for our flight on to Lijiang (see another page in this series). |
